SCENE 3
INT. NATHAN’S BASEMENT- CORNER ROOM: ADAM, REBECCA, and DEREK are in ROOM talking.
DEREK
So…what’s the plan?
ADAM
I don’t know but it has to be done
REBECCA
I can’t believe you guys are actually going to kill Nathan
DEREK
It has to be done. If we stay here much longer there is a chance we are going to die because of him
ADAM
Derek is right. Follow my lead
ADAM opens the DOOR and walks near NATHAN with DEREK and REBECCA not far behind.
NATHAN
What are you doing? I told you guys to stay in the room!
NATHAN stands up and makes a gesture that he is going to pull out his gun
ADAM
Calm down. We aren’t going to kill you. We just want to figure out our next move.
NATHAN
I have everything figured out. I know what we are going to do.
DEREK
What? Just sit down here and wait the whole thing out?
NATHAN
Exactly…those creatures won’t be able to get down here. Eventually they’ll go somewhere else and-
Cut off by DEREK
DEREK
What! They know we are down here! They won’t leave!
NATHAN glares at DEREK
ADAM
Yea, we should go there and face those things head on.
NATHAN
No! It’s safe down here. No one is leaving without my consent. Understand?
ADAM, DEREK, and REBECCA look at each other trying to figure out they should do. DEREK motions at ADAM to pick up the RIFLE beside the COUCH next to him. REBECCA shakes her head no. ADAM picks up the RIFLE and aims it at NATHAN
NATHAN
What are you doing? (Calm voice)
DEREK
We’re doing what needs to be done
NATHAN
You’re going to kill me?
ADAM
No. We’re going to kill those creatures that are waiting to kill us up stairs
DEREK
And you’re not going to move, or else Adam pulls the trigger
REBECCA looks on in terror
NATHAN
No he won’t. Would you…Adam?
ADAM
If you leave me no choice
NATHAN
No you won’t
NATHAN motions to pull out his gun while turning towards DEREK giving a sinister smile.
NATHAN
And you won’t open that door
DEREK
Oh really?
NATHAN
If you do as much as motion to turn that knob…I’ll kill you
DEREK slowly walks up the STAIRS to the DOOR. NATHAN walks to the end of the STAIRS, and stops after ADAM cocks the gun. DEREK begins to turn the LOCK. NATHAN pulls out his GUN.
NATHAN
Don’t…don’t open that door!
DEREK looks back at NATHAN, then looks over to ADAM
DEREK
Adam!
ADAM
Nathan, don’t do it!
DEREK tests how far NATHAN is willing to go by unlocking the door.
NATHAN
Don’t!
REBECCA runs behind ADAM looking on.
REBECCA
Derek, please just stop!
ADAM
Nathan put the gun down!
DEREK looks at ADAM, then REBECCA
DEREK
I’m not going to stay here any longer. I won’t.
DEREK begins to turn the KNOB, and then is interrupted by a sudden pain. REBECCA drops to her knees, and ADAM drops his GUN looking on in horror. NATHAN is seen with his GUN aimed high where DEREK was standing. DEREK looks down and feels his chest where the pain struck. There is BLOOD on his fingers. He looks back down at NATHAN, and NATHAN looks at him. DEREK falls down the STAIRS…dead.
ADAM
My god…you actually did it. You killed him! You killed Derek!
ADAM pins NATHAN against the WALL
ADAM
Why did you do it!?
NATHAN
I told him not to open the door
ADAM
No! You didn’t have to do that!
NATHAN tears ADAM’S grip and throws him to the ground. REBECCA is seen crying in the corner.
NATHAN
Yes I did…it had to be done. Now get back in that room.
END OF SCENE
SCENE 4INT. NATHAN’S BASEMENT- CORNER ROOMADAM is pacing back and forth while REBECCA is lightly sobbing on the floor. ADAM stops and looks down at her.
ADAM
I don’t know what to do….God-damnit! My best friends dead…
REBECCA
Nathan’s a murderer….a monster. And he thinks that he’s doing god’s work…
ADAM
I was such a jerk to Derek for not giving Nathan a chance….Derek was right about Nathan all along. Nathan…that son-of a-bitch is going to pay…
REBECCA
What are we going to do now? Nathan won’t let us leave….
ADAM
I don’t know! I don’t know! Don’t you understand that my friend was just shot? My best friend, who I’ve known for half my life! Dead! Gone!
REBECCA is a bit put off and stands up to comfort ADAM.
ADAM
Don’t touch me! Just leave me alone!
REBECCA
Fine! I lost my best friend too! You just have to deal right now! There will be a time for grieving….but right now we need to do something. We can’t stay here any longer with that psychopath out there!
REBECCA walks to the bed where MARK is laying.
ADAM
Your right, I’m sorry. I just don’t know how to deal with this. God! Is there anything we can do? Just yesterday everything was fine…now Derek’s dead…My family is dead…
MARK stirs uncomfortably and awakes. He sits up painfully.
MARK
What happened?...I…I thought I heard gunshots.
ADAM
Mark I….I don’t know how to say this…
MARK
Where’s Derek?
ADAM can’t bring himself to speak. REBECCA looks down sadly while MARK looks around franticly.
MARK
Adam?...What happened to Derek?
ADAM
He’s dead. Mark….Nathan shot him
MARK
How? Why?
ADAM
He tried to leave. We were wrong about Nathan. He’s not in his right mind. He thinks he’s on a quest from god….I….Derek tried to go upstairs and Nathan shot him.
MARK
Oh god…why is this happening?...Why-
MARK coughs violently and hacks some blood into the TOWEL next to him.
ADAM
Oh…Mark
REBECCA
Are you okay?
MARK
No! My insides feel like they’re being ripped apart. My head’s on fire….
ADAM
Mark…
MARK
My heads going to spilt open! Adam please….you have to end it
ADAM
God, Mark no!
MARK
Yes please…you have to. I’m turning into one of them…I can feel it…
ADAM
Mark, you can’t ask me to do something like that
REBECCA
Oh god…I can’t watch this
MARK
Do it! There’s nothing to live for anymore. Everyone’s dead…Derek…probably my parents too. I’m in so much pain. I can’t….I won’t become a monster. Please just do this for me…I know I was never a good friend to you but….I’m begging you…just end it…
ADAM
I…can’t
MARK
Please!
ADAM looks up at REBECCA
REBECCA
I...I can't watch this...
REBECCA exits the ROOM. ADAM walks besides MARKS bed.
MARK
Why…why is this happening?
ADAM
I don’t know Mark.
MARK
Why us?
ADAM
I don’t know
MARK coughs more BLOOD into the TOWEL
MARK
(Having difficulty talking)
In case this is the last time we get to talk, I just want to say that I’m sorry if I was ever a jerk to you. It… none of that matters anymore. The world’s ending, right?
ADAM
Yeah…nobody could have predicted that a deadly outbreak would have occurred.
MARK laughs lightly then coughs in pain.
MARK
But I mean it. I was a real asshole to you for awhile…I…I thought that I had to act like somebody better than I was.
ADAM
Its fine-
MARK
No, it’s not. Treating you and others like shit…I guess dieing has really changed my outlook on life.
ADAM
Don’t say that…
MARK
What? That I’m dieing? There’s no use hiding the fact now….AH! God it hurts
ADAM
What?
MARK
Everything!...Damn…Adam…I don’t know how I can control it any longer
ADAM
Control what…..what’s happening?
MARK
There’s something….a hunger…building inside me. Like I’m fainting. Like darkness is covering my eyes…I feel a voice in my head…a hunger fighting to get out
MARK begins to twitch and cough harder; blood begins to drip out of his eyes.
ADAM
Oh my god, Mark?
MARK
Please ughh!!! End it! You need to kill me before….
REBECCA is shown walking to NATHAN.
NATHAN
I thought I told you to-
REBECCA
Wait you don’t understand! Mark’s dieing!
NATHAN
Oh…he’s changing
MARK is heard screaming in the background. NATHAN cocks his SHOTGUN and begins to head in. He turns to REBECCA first.
NATHAN
Stay out here, no matter what you here.
NATHAN enters the room and sees ADAM on the floor.
ADAM
Look out!
NATHAN turns to see MARK standing up on the BED. MARK’s face and hands are covered in smears of BLOOD. MARK’s head is twitching ferociously and he is screaming. NATHAN brings the GUN up and aims, but MARK swipe’s the GUN aside. MARK tackles NATHAN and pins him to the wall. NATHAN is holding MARK back.
NATHAN
Adam! Get the gun!
MARK is hacking while attacking NATHAN. ADAM dives for the GUN and spins around to shoot MARK. MARK jumps backwards to the bed, his look less animalistic
MARK
Kill Me! Ughh!!!! Kill me!!
